Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Business

As a company, Cogentes is committed to fostering a healthy environment and encouraging physical fitness among our employees. To promote this mission, we created community involvement by hosting bike rides as well as sponsoring local events. Many of our employees are members of the Bicycling Club of Milledgeville and participate in races and fun rides as well. In 2013, Cogentes was awarded the Bronze Bicycle Friendly Business designation by the American League of Bicyclists, a designation only shared by 600 other companies nationwide. Our own cyclists, known as “Team Cogentes” have competed regionally over the past two years and are growing in numbers. We are excited about promoting cycling as a means of fitness as well as an eco-friendly mode of transportation. Cogentes offers a “Bike Friendly” environment for its employees and for the Milledgeville- Baldwin County area using the following practices:

  • Office space located among bike routes, bike trails, safe traffic routes to and from town;
  • Office features shower facilities and a dedicated bike room for commuters;
  • Guaranteed Ride Home Program: all commuters offered a vehicle ride home during inclement weather.

In 2014, we were motivated by the National Bike Challenge to create our own “Cogentes Bike Challenge.” We added a “Bike with the Boss” weekly ride where all available employees commute with CEO Tom Glover from the office to a local restaurant for a company-paid lunch. This ride was also used as an educational tool, allowing experienced riders to coach less experienced employees on cycling safety, road rules, and basic cycling techniques, like shifting and proper braking. We created a bicycling incentive program in 2014, rewarding employees 1 day of paid vacation for every 250 miles ridden, earning up to a total of 5 days. In addition to these rewards, Tom offered to host a company Labor Day party at Lake Sinclair if everyone rode during the challenge. It worked! We had 100% participation in the program, with 4 employees earning a total of 6 days paid vacation! We also gave away 2 netbook computers to the 2 employees logging in the most miles in 2014. The Labor Day party, too, was a hit, and everyone enjoyed the team fitness effort.

We also added to the list of our employee benefits a company-sponsored membership in the Bicycling Club of Milledgeville and a free pass to ride in one of the club’s annual cycling events. A final company perk was the addition of a program where the company will provide financial assistance to employees to help with the purchase of their first bicycle used for commuting.

Cogentes actively participates in the local and state cycling community by donating time, money, and services to the Bicycling Club of Milledgeville as well as our local Dream Team group, supporting youth riders training for BRAG. We are an annual sponsor of the local charity rides, Deep Roots Charity Ride and April Fools Ride, which raise monies for area nonprofits, advocacy programs, and trail maintenance. We also provide free consulting services for statewide organizations such as the Georgia Cycling League.

As part of the work in conjunction with the Bicycling Club of Milledgeville, we have focused on activities that involve youth in cycling. These activities range from organizing family friendly and kids rides, to participating in cycling safety education and riding with “The Dream Team,” a group of underprivileged youths who have

embraced cycling as a fun fitness program and exciting completion platform. We are dedicated to developing bike-friendly riding, practices, and legislation to the Milledgeville- Baldwin area. We are also proud to be Georgia’s first Gold Bicycle Friendly Business, awarded by our friends at the League of American Cyclists!
